An Israeli academic has claimed that raping wives and mothers of Palestinian Hamas militants is the only thing that could deter further terrorist attacks.
The remarks by renowned Middle East scholar Mordechai Kedar of Bar-Ilan University were made three weeks ago after the grim discovery of the bodies of the three kidnapped Israeli teenagers, but the recording was published online (in Hebrew) on Monday.
"The only thing that could deter a suicide bomber is knowing that if caught, his sister or his mother would be raped," said Kedar on Israel Radio Bet.
"It sounds very bad, but that’s the Middle East," he continued. "You have to understand the culture in which we live. The only thing that deters [Hamas leaders] is a threat to the connection between their heads and their shoulders."
To the shocked radio presenter who said that “we cannot take such steps, of course”, Kedar replied:
"I’m not talking about what we should or shouldn’t do. I’m talking about the facts. The only thing that deters a suicide bomber is the knowledge that if he pulls the trigger or blows himself up, his sister will be raped. That’s all. That’s the only thing that will bring him back home, in order to preserve his sister’s honor."
Kedar served for 25 years in the military intelligence, where he specialised in Islamic groups. He is currently a researcher at the right-wing Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies of Bar Ilan but previously worked for a shadowy organisation, the Israel Academia Monitor, which fights left-leaning academic professors.

At which point do you say ‘enough is enough’ and speak out against your hard earned tax dollars being sent to/your leaders supporting this country?
Ethnic cleansing, targeting civilians, ambulances, hospitals, harvesting organs of dead Palestinians without consent, forced sterilisation of Ethiopians, land grab, apartheid wall, illegal settlements, and now incitement to rape - is it time to wake up, world?

What the hell

Everyone is always speaking out on rape culture and how much we need to stop rape from happening. I would like to see this also added to the protests.
Let’s see if y’all can signal boost this and make it big…
Because at the moment, there’s only a handful of people actually protesting this. The rest of you are only worried about yourselves…

"We urge you to reflect on whom, in the struggle for your own rights and your own freedoms, you exclude and whose humanity you impinge. We call on you to stop promoting that “good immigrant” assimilationist narrative and we call on you to apologize for using the crisis of Central American children at the border as an opportunity to promote your own image. We invite you to come to California, to join us in our advocacy and service to community. We want you to see how the work that has laid out the platform for you to be able to go around and parade around this nation, and get arrested, is built."

"An abusive man may embellish his childhood suffering once he discovers that it helps him escape responsibility. The National District Attorney’s Association Bulletin reported a revealing study that was conducted on another group of destructive men: child sexual abusers. The researcher asked each man whether he himself had been sexually victimized as a child. A hefty 67 percent of the subjects said yes. However, the researcher then informed the men that he was going to hook them up to a lie-detector test and ask them the same questions again. Affirmative answers suddenly dropped to only 29 percent. In other words, abusers of all varieties tend to realize the mileage they can get out of saying, ‘I’m abusive because the same thing was done to me.’"

GLAAD study shows 83% of major Hollywood films in 2013 had no LGBT characters

gaywrites:

GLAAD has just released its 2014 Studio Responsibility Index, tracking LGBT representation in the past year’s major Hollywood films.

Of the 102 major Hollywood films from 2013, 17 of them — about 16.7% — included characters who identified as LGBT. That means 83.3% of last year’s biggest movies had no LGBT characters. The study tracks the "quantity, quality and diversity of images" of LGBT people in movies, and this year’s results were not promising.

None of the seven studios received an “excellent” rating, but Sony Columbia came in on top with a “good” score, thanks to movies like “Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” which also nabbed a GLAAD Media Award nomination. Meanwhile, Universal and Disney were among the studios to receive an “adequate” grade, while both Paramount and Warner Brothers were considered outright failures.

Meanwhile, to assess individual films, GLAAD officials developed the “Vito Russo Test,” which examines how multidimensional a LGBT character is, as well as how significant he or she may be to the plot of a specific movie. Seven out of the 17 major studio films featuring LGBT characters passed the test this year, according to the report.

In case you’re wondering — yes, the Vito Russo Test is totally a spinoff of the Bechdel test, and it’s pretty cool. Here’s what you need to pass the test:

  • The film contains a character that is identifiably lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender.
  • That character must not be solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity. I.E. they are made up of the same sort of unique character traits commonly used to differentiate straight characters from one another.
  • The LGBT character must be tied into the plot in such a way that their removal would have a significant effect. Meaning they are not there to simply provide colorful commentary, paint urban authenticity, or (perhaps most commonly) set up a punchline. The character should “matter.”

Check out the full results over at GLAAD. I honestly hadn’t thought about movie representation of LGBT people — too busy worrying about TV! — but come to think of it, these results are actually miserable.
